Ahead of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic receives bad news about his visa status.

Novak Djokovic is in danger of being expelled from Australia. Djokovic’s visa was revoked for the second time by the Australian government ahead of the Australian Open, according to ESPN. Djokovic was allowed to compete in the tournament despite not having received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Minister of Immigration Alex Hawke said he cancelled Djokovic’s visa using his ministerial discretion. The tennis legend is now facing deportation just three days before the Australian Open, where he has won nine of his 20 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic has filed an appeal, hoping for the same outcome as earlier this week, when a judge ruled in his favor after his visa was revoked for the second time.

Djokovic, 34, faces a three-year ban from Australia if he is deported. Hawke said in a statement that he revoked Djokovic’s visa due to “health and good order concerns,” and that Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government “is firmly committed to protecting Australia’s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
