Argentina’s stunning 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup has drawn criticism from fans for defender Cristian Romero’s performance.
The center-back for Tottenham Hotspur played poorly as La Albiceleste suffered a shocking loss to begin their season. Romero performed two clearances, one shot block, and one tackle.
After Lionel Messi had scored from the penalty spot to give Argentina the lead, he could have done better to stop Saudi Arabia from tying the score. Saleh Al-Shehri swung Romero around and beat Emiliano Martinez with a beautiful shot to score. The center-back might have performed better for the second goal, when Salem Al-Dawsari scored brilliantly past Martinez and an inept Argentina defense.
The Spurs defender, who has struggled with an injury this season, was taking the field for the first time since October 26. He was eventually replaced by Lisandro Martinez in the 59th minute.
La Albiceleste’s 36-game unbeaten streak over a three-year period came to an end because this marked the first time in 11 games that they gave up two goals with Romero on the field. As one of the favorites, Argentina’s supporters were undoubtedly dissatisfied with the team’s performance, particularly Romero’s.
