Irish wonderkid is signed by AC Milan in a fanciful deal that “doesn’t seem real.”

After a fruitful loan stint with the Serie A giants that started back in February, Cathal Heffernan has made the fairytale permanent switch from Cork City to AC Milan.

After being impressed by the Republic of Ireland youth international who made his senior debut for Cork just last year after playing in their under 18 side, Milan exercised their option to make the deal permanent.

The central defender, who is 17 years old and has already made one appearance for Milan’s Primavera 1 team, hails from a well-known family that includes Olympian parents Rob and Marian. He has also developed a close friendship with former Premier League midfielder Stephen Ireland.

Liam Kearney, head of the Cork City academy, said that Cathal had performed admirably while out on loan and now had the chance to sign on a long-term basis.

He has earned this chance through hard work and dedication on his part as well as the efforts of his coaches at Ringmahon Rangers and in our academy, according to the statement.

Heffernan acknowledged that his initial loan agreement didn’t quite feel real when he spoke out about it in February. It just doesn’t feel real, he said.
