The biggest football tournament in the world is about to begin, and referee Ismail Elfath will be right in the middle of it.
Elfath, the lone American referee traveling to Qatar, will be one of many officials in charge of the matches.
Here is all you need to know about him.
Who is Ismail Elfath?
Ismail Elfath was born in 1982 in Morocco and immigrated to the US when he was eighteen.
Elfath began his career in 2011 as a fourth official before making his MLS refereeing debut in 2012.
The 40-year-old eventually registered as a FIFA official four years later.
Later that year, Elfath presided over the inaugural game utilizing VAR, a procedure now employed in the Premier League.
The American was selected to represent his country and officiated the 2019 Under-20 World Cup championship match between South Korea and Ukraine in 2019.
Due to this, he became involved with the 2019 Club World Cup, where he oversaw Liverpool’s 2-1 semifinal victory over Monterrey.
Since then, he has won the MLS Referee of the Year award twice and been chosen to officiate the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
