Mindy Kaling Opens Up About Her Romantic Life, Frustrations with Dating, and Desire for Children

She revealed, “I was always obsessed with romantic love and obsessing about boys, even when I was, like, 13 or 14 years old.” It was this intense passion and interest in boys that made her feel even more desperate to find someone. However, she also acknowledged that this desperation led to unhappiness, saying, “And there is also a desperation to it that makes you incredibly unhappy. In my 20s, [I wanted] to find someone, anyone, to settle down with.” Mindy admitted that she would date guys for two or three years in her twenties, only to break up with them later.

Changing Priorities and Growing Disdain for the Hollywood Social Scene

As Kaling entered her thirties, her priorities and perspective began to shift. She started to despise attending parties and social events in Hollywood, favoring a more laid-back and family-oriented lifestyle. Mindy explained, “I started to really like the vibe of going to friends’ houses when they have kids. On one level, I wanted to have children, and on another level, I wanted my social life to change. I wanted it to look different.” She expressed frustration with the prevalent Hollywood social scene, saying, “I didn’t need to be going to some house in the Hills where there is no parking and you walk into a party that is just a bunch of dudes my age who are interested in younger women.”

The Intensification of Desire for Children

The passing of Kaling’s mother in 2012 further intensified her desire to have children. Mindy shared, “I feel blessed because equal to my desire to find a man, I wanted to have children. And that intensified when my mother died. I didn’t want to be on my deathbed without anybody around my bed. I wanted there to be kids and I wanted there to be grandkids.” Mindy’s love for her children is evident, and she has always wanted to create cherished memories with them, like going to plays and having extravagant dinners together.
