Starbucks added a tipping option, and customers don’t like it.

On social media, a lot of people have complained about feeling “forced” to tip at restaurants, coffee shops, and other places where it isn’t normally expected.

The general consensus was that you should tip servers and bartenders in the dining and food service industry because tips made up the majority of their income.

If you don’t leave a sizeable tip in these situations, you’re seriously hurting the bottom lines of the employees in the food service industry, who, as mentioned earlier, depend heavily on tips to make ends meet. Tossing your change or perhaps an extra dollar into the tip jar when purchasing a cup of coffee is generally accepted to be the extent of the gratuity.

Even so, it’s not viewed as a serious offense if customers choose not to tip their barista because they are paid hourly and their pay is not largely determined by the amount of tips they receive.

However, an increasing number of coffee chains are allowing customers to add a tip to their cards, particularly those that use POS systems like Clover and Square. And it doesn’t appear that anyone is particularly pleased about it.
