Many mixed martial arts fans believe Usman won Edward’s first title defense.
Edwards won the first two rounds on the judges’ cards, while Usman won the second round.
They all agreed that Edwards deserved a deduction in points for the third round, and their decision was unanimous.
The veteran referee Ben Cartlidge awarded round four to Usman and round five to Edwards.
Both fights were awarded victories by judges David Lethaby and Chris Lee, who were both supporting the defending champion.
Edwards, a former street kid who has become a beloved figure in Birmingham, became visibly emotional after he was able to keep his victory.
“He didn’t get any takedowns and I was blocking several of his shots,” he said.
I appreciate him being such a worthy opponent.
