What Does It Mean If Jennifer Hudson Is an EGOT Winner?

At the 75th annual Tony Awards, multi-hyphenate Jennifer Hudson added a new title to her long professional resume. She became the newest member of an elite group of entertainers who have won the EGOT award. This honor has only been bestowed on a handful of people so far. What is an EGOT, and how does one obtain one? Who else belongs to the EGOT winners’ club in the entertainment industry?

What does the phrase EGOT mean?

The term EGOT is said to have been coined by actor Phillip Michael Thomas, who played Ricardo Tubbs on TV’s Miami Vice from 1984 to 1990.

Thomas wore a gold medallion emblazoned with the letters EGOT, which stood for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, according to Vanity Fair.

“Hopefully, in the next five years, I’ll win all of those awards,” Thomas said in an interview in 1984.

Following that, EGOT came to represent excellence in the performing arts.

However, in 2009, the phrase was popularized by a fourth-season episode of 30 Rock titled Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001.

Tracy Morgan goes to Yakov’s Nubian Bling Explosion in search of a present for his wife.

He notices a large diamond-encrusted medallion, which he assumes is Thomas’ infamous necklace.

The medallion belonged to Philip Michael Thomas, according to the clerk. He clarifies that EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, and it is a goal.

Since then, the term EGOT has been used to refer to entertainers who have won all four of the industry’s most prestigious awards.
