While snorkeling, a woman died moments after family members heard her screaming for an “unknown reason.”

Officials said a woman from SEATTLE died on Thursday while snorkeling in a national park.
Carol Murrell Maillet was snorkeling along a beach in Dry Tortugas National Park near Key West, Florida, when her family heard her screaming for “unknown reasons,” according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Nearby bystanders attempted CPR on the beach after the 74-year-old woman was brought to the shore.
Maillet was eventually airlifted to a medical center on a nearby island in the Florida Keys.
According to police, she died at 2.47 p.m. on Thursday.
Maillet was not on a guided snorkeling trip when she was attacked while swimming along the Fort Jefferson beach wall, according to officials.


According to MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt, there was a family member in the water and other witnesses nearby.
The cause of death has yet to be determined, but sheriff’s office officials say autopsy results are pending.
The death, according to authorities, was not caused by foul play.
The investigation into Maillet’s death is ongoing.
