The Met Gala is a fashion and affluence extravaganza. While the majority of attendees are usually wealthy actors and musicians, politicians are also present. And this year, two different politicians used their outfits to make social commentary. Carolyn B Maloney, a Democrat and the US Representative for New York’s 12th congressional district, was one of them. Maloney wore a gown with sashes that read “equal rights for women” to the Met Gala, which was decorated in the suffrage movement’s purple, white, and gold colors. She also carried a green purse with the words “ERA YES” written on it, referring to the Equal Rights Amendment.
