Carnage? What mayhem? Chelsea’s Premier League season got off to the best possible start on Saturday night with a victory over Everton following a turbulent summer.

With recent additions Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly starting right away and Marc Cucurella, who cost £62 million, making his debut off the bench, it was simple to forget Chelsea had a rocky preseason.

Prior to this performance, Thomas Tuchel’s anxiety had not done much to lighten the mood in camp. However, this performance will undoubtedly cheer up Cobham before an important game the following weekend.

At Goodison Park, Chelsea took the lead in the ninth minute of extra time after Ben Godfrey needed extensive treatment before being replaced in the first half.

Abdoulaye Doucoure fouled Ben Chilwell in the box after Koulibaly’s through ball, and Jorginho converted the ensuing penalty.

Everton had the better chances to tie the score after the break, but they were unable to do so. This gave Chelsea, who continued to play sluggishly, the victory and allowed them to turn their attention to getting ready for their match against Tottenham at home the following Sunday.
