Navalny’s story demonstrates why Putin is so afraid of the internet in The Man Putin Couldn’t Kill, a Channel 4 documentary.

With its dark, murderous subject matter,

The Man Putin Couldn’t Kill was surprisingly playful. It weaved his political YouTube videos in with talking heads and footage from the investigative journalism collective Bellingcat to tell the story of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s poisoning in August 2020.

Kitsch, cartoonish graphics – interviews on a CGI laptop screen, whooshing fact-files and timelines – echoed the styles of Navalny’s own videos, but it became clear as the story progressed that they had a deeper meaning as well. Those Navalny attacks on Vladimir Putin that made him a laughingstock were perhaps the most effective. “This is probably the worst damage done to the Russian secret services that I have seen in my career,” one interviewee said of the underwear memes and jokes made about Putin and the FSB following the revelation that Navalny was poisoned via his pants. ”

Navalny and Bellingcat’s investigation into Putin’s аlleged possession of а mаssive pаlаce with а retrаctаble stripper pole, €700 toilet brushes, аnd аn underground ice hockey rink resulted in а 6% drop in his аpprovаl rаtings.
