Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to make a statement with her dress at the highly-anticipated, elite, and most expensive event of the year — the 2021 MET Gala. Celebrities had plenty to work with given the theme of ‘American Independence,’ but Ocasio-Cortez chose to sashay in a chic white evening gown with the words ‘TAX THE RICH’ written in bold red across the back. Social media, on the other hand, was fixated on something completely different: Ocasio-Cortez’s dress was oddly reminiscent of Joy Villa’s ‘BUILD THE WALL’ dress from the 2019 Grammy Awards.
Whether Ocasio-Cortez intended to slam with a classic throwback or not is still a mystery. However, social media is clearly not over the similarities between Ocasio-Cortez’s off-shoulder tulle-bottom gown and Villa’s previous wall-printed outfit with a plunging neckline.
