BROKEN BOW, NEBRASKA: Josh and Sarah Bowmar, a well-known bowhunting couple, were fined $133,000 for their involvement in the largest poaching ring ever in Nebraska. Josh, 32, and Sarah, 33, of Ohio, were sentenced by a federal judge for deliberately hunting white-tailed deer and turkeys in Nebraska without licenses and with the use of bait.
The Bowmars were charged with participating in over a dozen hunting trips with Hidden Hills Outfitters, a Nebraska-based business, between September 10, 2015, and November 6, 2017. The Bowmars had shared videos of their trophy kills on social media. The Lacey Act, which forbids the illegal trade in native plants, fish, or wildlife, was alleged to have been broken by them. It was found that the Bowmars had used trailers, pickup trucks, and SUVs to bring deer and turkey, both whole and in pieces, to their residence in Ohio and other locations. Following a guilty plea to a misdemeanor conspiracy charge in a Nebraska district court on October 19, the Bowmars were sentenced. In exchange, the prosecution consented to drop four additional, more serious accusations of illegal baiting.
A family in Pennsylvania is furious that the hunter who killed their dog after mistaking it for a coyote has not been charged.
